Conventions of music videos

The typical conventions of music videos vary considerably between different genres, however there are conventions that apply to all genres. Firstly, the music video shows the artist performing. This creates the "star image" effect that is so important in a music video. To also increase the star image, lots of close ups are used. Secondly, the lyrics of the song influences and sometimes almost dictates what is shown in the music video. This is so the song and the music video have a close relationship, and are seen as one single piece of art, rather than a video, and a song. The pace of the editing is in time with the beat of the music. This again, allows the video to have a stonger connection with the song, and keeps the video up to the beat of the music.

The photograph below is a clip from th music video "My Dark Place Alone" by "The Murderdolls". Their genre of music is death metal, and as you can see from the screen shot, their music video is full of blood, darkness and scary things. All of these meets the conventions that a death metal song would include.

In terms of the genre I am using, the editing will be very fast paced thoughout the video. This is because the genre is very faced paced and bouncy. The main actor in the video will also be the singer. This is because for that type of music, the lyrics often tell a story, so the video should feel quite personal. Close ups are also used to reinfornce this idea.
